The Briefest of Introductions

My name is Andrew Gentles. I author works of Grimdark Fantasy. Through my writing, I like to explore power dynamics, intrinsic and extrinsic motivators, macabre themes and the variability in character’s morality. I believe that introducing the supernatural elevates all stories, but the core of any tale needs to feel human.

Background

You asked for it. I hold a Bachelor’s of Science in Physics. I’m a 29-year-old living in Canada. Working a white-collar job in middle-management has highlighted my need for a sense of purpose unrelated to a conventional career. Corporate-centric spreadsheets are something I excel at, and no, I’m not proud of that fact. Yes, that pun was intended. The Monday to Friday workweek grind is a thing I’ve been accustomed to for the better part of a decade. I hold no literary accolades to brag of, beyond proud ownership of a humble book collection and a library card.

I can hear you yawning through my ethernet cable.

The thing is, I love to write.

There are a scant few hours every evening where I get to disappear into a craft I love. Minutes where I can explore my mind and create stories from nothing. Seconds where I think what I’m writing might just be saying something important.

Should you find some time for me, I’d love to share that something with you.

Writing Philosophy

I believe fiction is a sandbox for the human condition. What does that mean in terms of my creative approach? Take the characters, make them believable, make them flawed and relatable. Then put them through adversity and see how they change and react, both physically and spiritually. I want to create a human experience that resonates with readers. One where the stakes and characters feel genuine, but the environment is supernatural. I want to write fantasy that makes you feel the magical parts of your reality.

That’s the intent. That’s the promise I try to deliver on at every turn of the page.

Goal

The goal is to output high quality and engaging reads for enjoyment by the masses. If the masses turn out to be one stranger, to whom I sell a single copy, well, goal succeeded. I hope they enjoy it.

Current Projects and Aim

The Derivations Trilogy is my current focus. I aspire to have the first instalment of this adventure out for ravenous-reader’s consumption via self-publishing no later than the end of summer 2025. Following that, the intent is to publish the second and third novels soonest. In my downtime, I’ll be couponing aggressively for groceries.
